More Information

In July 2010, to mark the official national launch of Crohn’s and Colitis New Zealand (CCNZ) and in a quirky way to raise awareness of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD – an umbrella term for Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis), CCNZ and Abbott have created a Toilet Map for New Zealanders.
For patients with these conditions, finding the nearest available toilet can often be a critical situation.
The map is intended for sufferers of Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis but is a great resource for anybody (travellers, parents with young children).
The Toilet Map will be available in two electronic forms - as a website and in a New Zealand first – an iPhone app. Both will be unveiled at the group’s launch on July 29, 2010.
Through the facilitation of JML Communications, Abbott, Modica and Ceiba Solutions worked together to develop the Toilet Map website and iPhone application.
The Toilet Map website is an online resource to help anyone find nearby toilets. Through ads placed on the site, the online Toilet Map will be self-funding in the future.
Using existing mapping and GPS technology, an iPhone Toilet Map application gives users information on nearby toilets (iPhones also benefit from having a built-in GPS receiver).
Geosmart Maps has donated its maps to the effort. These maps have basic information for over a thousand public toilets across New Zealand.
The iPhone application unveiled at the CCNZ launch will be the introductory version of the map. The plan is to offer this basic version of the application for free. As the offering is refined, developers hope that a later edition will have the capacity to list additional toilets, facility information and the option to allow users to add toilets. This premium version of the app would be available for a small download fee (similar to other iPhone apps) and would serve as a fundraising mechanism for CCNZ. Both versions will be available to anyone looking for toilet information.
It is CCNZ’s hope that a Toilet Map app will have wide appeal as a fundraising tool for: families looking for changing stations, runners looking for facilities, travellers etc.
